Central is part of the Central and Western District on Hong Kong Island. The north shore of Hong Kong Island is one of the densest business areas in the city: the MTR Island Line runs from Kennedy Town to Chai Wan, the trams ("ding dings") between Kennedy Town and Shau Kei Wan, and many businesses trade from upper floors of office blocks and older tenement buildings. The south side is known for beaches, trails and fishing harbours such as Repulse Bay, Stanley and the Aberdeen typhoon shelter, which get busy at weekends and on public holidays. Central is Hong Kong's financial and business heart; the Central–Mid-Levels escalator links the streets up the hill, Lan Kwai Fong and SoHo come alive at night, and the Central piers serve the Outlying Islands.

Walking around Tai Kwun was a really interesting experience, especially seeing the old jail cells. There was something a little eerie about being inside them and imagining what the place must have been like years ago. What I appreciated most was how well Hong Kong has preserved the site while still making it accessible for people to experience. You can really see the effort that has gone into preserving the history and culture of the city. It’s not just an old building that was left behind; the history is still very much part of the experience. Definitely worth visiting!

An absolute hidden gem in the heart of Central! Tai Kwun (大館) is a masterclass in revitalizing historical structures. My husband was eager to check out the old police station compound, and it exceeded all expectations. The museum sections are massive and highly informative. Highlights included the expansive Parade Ground surrounded by beautiful colonial brick architecture, and walking straight into the 19th-century cell blocks of Victoria Prison. We also checked out the fantastic Summer Pop-up! at Galerie Ora-Ora, which is located right inside the Barrack Block. This place beautifully bridges the gap between old Hong Kong history and modern culture.

This is a unique and interesting place to visit. What was once a historic police station has been beautifully transformed into a cultural and heritage destination while preserving its original architecture and character. It's a great place to walk around, take photos, explore the exhibitions, and enjoy the mix of history, art, and modern cafés.

Visited Tai Kwun with my family and my parents in Feb 2019, and we were all completely amazed by the stunning restoration of the old prison and police station. It's a fantastic blend of history and art, offering something for every age. Highly recommended!

A nice communal space open to the public and all tourists. This space was previously a prison, now replaced with museums and exhibition centre. The building itself has a lot of heritage and you can definitely see the architecture from the old days. It's only a few steps away after you get off from the escalator so not a lot of uphill climbing.
