Wan Chai is part of the Wan Chai District on Hong Kong Island. The north shore of Hong Kong Island is one of the densest business areas in the city: the MTR Island Line runs from Kennedy Town to Chai Wan, the trams ("ding dings") between Kennedy Town and Shau Kei Wan, and many businesses trade from upper floors of office blocks and older tenement buildings. The south side is known for beaches, trails and fishing harbours such as Repulse Bay, Stanley and the Aberdeen typhoon shelter, which get busy at weekends and on public holidays. Wan Chai mixes the office towers around the Convention and Exhibition Centre with old markets and tenement buildings, and nearby restaurants get busy during big trade fairs.

I took a few levels of Cantonese for Beginners at Hong Kong Language School and it was such a great experience. Our teacher, a Hong Kong local, was patient and encouraging. I learned useful phrases for every day life. Although you can get around Hong Kong without English, I highly recommend HKLS for the beginner classes. Locals really appreciate when you use Cantonese, and you can have a better understanding of the culture.

I spent almost 8 years studying Cantonese at HKLS. I started with the group classes which gave me a very good base. Once I felt the pace of the classes weren't suiting me, I switched to private tuition, which worked really well. The teachers were happy to help me explore the language on my own path & accommodate my way of learning. Super flexible! After 8 years in Hong Kong, I can't imagine how limited my experience here would have been if I wasn't able to converse with Hong Kongers in their own language, it really opens Hong Kong up & that's an invaluable experience. The classes are informal, but that suits Cantonese well, as there is no internationally recognized standard & the language is passed down orally.

Both my son and I have been taking lessons for a number of months now in Cantonese. Both of us really enjoy the lessons with teacher Angela. She is knowledgeable and always positive. We follow the language school textbook but the lessons are always fun and challenging. Lessons with Hong Kong Language School have given us both the confidence to try out what we have learned in lessons and although both of us are still very much beginners we are beginning to understand snippets of conversations that we hear around Hong Kong. What has also impressed us about the lessons is the degree of flexibility in terms of subjects covered and in particular the cultural insights that we have been given into Hong Kong culture and traditions. Highly recommended.

I have been taking Cantonese classes at HKLS for years. I started in group lessons then moved to private. I have had fantastic teachers and have learned so much! My classes are always fun and interesting. We use a combination of their book and general conversation to improve my vocabulary and pronunciation. I find the books rather interesting because they offer insights into local culture! Highly recommend Hong Kong Language School! I like my classes so much that I have continued taking Cantonese even after we moved to a new country!

I found the Hong Kong Language School after an internet search and luckily for me it turned out to be a very good school indeed! My classes were very enjoyable and adapted to suit both my needs and abilities. It made learning fun and didn’t seem like work at all. At first I had private classes without classmates. Then one woman joined my class and we got along very easily. We had the same language level which I think was perfectly matched by the school. The class atmosphere was very good, we had good conversations in Mandarin and by learning from the other classmate’s strengths and weaknesses I could improve my own language skill. I think the price for the language class is very reasonable . If you compare the price with other language schools in Hong Kong the one here is almost the cheapest and the classes small enough to learn as much as you want. The school environment is very nice. The school rooms are small but big enough to learn in a peaceful atmosphere. There is a tea corner where you can serve yourself with water, tea or coffee and there are even some snacks in case you get hungry before or after class. The other students are from different countries and you get easily
