About Isoya Japanese Vegetarian Restaurant

Isoya Japanese Vegetarian Restaurant is a vegetarian restaurant in Wan Chai, at 1/F, 7 Mallory St, Wan Chai, Hong Kong Island. Locals and visitors alike tend to check the same things before going, so this page brings together the practical details: where it is, how to get in touch, when it is open and how customers rate it. The address puts it on an upper floor of a building (an "upstairs shop", very common in Hong Kong), so note the floor and unit number; lifts can be slow at busy times, and some older buildings only have stairs.

Many Hong Kong restaurants add a 10% service charge to the bill, and tipping beyond that is optional. Popular places fill up at lunchtime and on weekend evenings, so book by phone, WhatsApp or a platform such as OpenRice; some set a time limit or a minimum spend. Most offer both dine-in and takeaway, and Octopus, credit cards, FPS and PayMe are widely accepted, though smaller places may take cash only. Some vegetarian restaurants are fully vegan while others use eggs and dairy, so ask if it matters to you.

Opening hours: Mon–Sat 12:00–15:00 and 18:00–22:00, Sun closed. It is open 6 days a week. There is a break between the lunch and dinner sessions. Many small businesses close for a few days around Lunar New Year and may shut early or not open during typhoons and black rainstorms, so check the latest news before you set off. Phone: 5500 8812. Hong Kong numbers have eight digits; from abroad, dial +852 first. It is a mobile number, and many local businesses also answer enquiries on WhatsApp. Its website is happycow.net, which may show prices, details of what it offers or online booking.

Customers give it an average of 4.4 out of 5 on Google (412 reviews), a high score by any measure.

Wan Chai is part of the Wan Chai District on Hong Kong Island. The island is steep, with many streets climbing the hillside; the Central–Mid-Levels escalator links Central with the Mid-Levels and the Peak Tram runs up to The Peak. Offices, malls and old neighbourhood shops sit side by side, restaurants are packed at the office lunch hour (roughly 13:00–14:00), and with parking scarce the MTR, tram or bus is usually easier than driving.

We went to Isoya with high hopes, but left feeling frustrated and genuinely disappointed. The moment we entered, the restaurant looked spacious and nicely decorated. We were excited by the idea of trying good Japanese vegetarian food—especially the vegetarian/vegan ramen and sushi options. We ordered two set lunches, including one premium set with an assorted sushi plate. However, the wait time was much longer than we expected. Even though the restaurant was only around 60–70% occupied, our food took significantly more time than it should have. Once the meals arrived, the sets didn’t feel worth the price. The food was tasteless, and it was hard not to think that the experience reinforced the common myth that vegetarian and vegan food can taste like “cardboard.” We were really looking forward to flavorful Japanese vegetarian ramen and sushi, but what we received didn’t match expectations. In particular: - The ramen noodles were not chewy—instead, they were soggy. - The miso soup tasted odd to us, more like a peanut-based flavor rather than a traditional miso taste. - I also realized I may not enjoy soba noodles when served hot, but it felt less like a personal preference and mor

Had two delicious meals here recently. Their new location is lovely! Highly recommended even if you’re not vegetarian.

I’ve visited a few times, and the food is consistently refined and delicious. They always include a complimentary mini dessert, which is a thoughtful touch. The staff are friendly and attentive to detail.

It was my first time to try. I am amazed by its building, look like a quiet oasis in busy area. The staffs there are super nice and helpful. Salad and appetitizer are very good. I love the vibe and coziness of this place. Good to have nice chat with friends.

This is already my third visit. The environment is very nice—lots of natural light and plenty of space. The food is very fresh. I tried different Japanese teas and coffee, and they were all to my taste. Having a Japanese vegetarian restaurant in the middle of a busy city—what a pleasant surprise!
