Shek Kip Mei is part of the Sham Shui Po District in Kowloon. Around Kwun Tong and Kowloon Bay many industrial buildings now house offices, restaurants, gyms and studios, while Kai Tak is a newer district. Kowloon's streets are busiest in the evening and at weekends, shops keep long hours with many open until about 22:00, and the Kwun Tong, Tsuen Wan and Tuen Ma lines plus buses and minibuses reach almost everywhere. Hong Kong summers are hot and humid, and typhoons and rainstorms come mostly in summer and autumn; when the Observatory issues signal No. 8 or above or a black rainstorm warning, many businesses close until it is lifted.

Hands down one of the best museums I’ve ever been to. I loved how the ordinary daily life of people came alive in here. Especially looking at the reconstructed rooms of Hong Kongers was amazing. Please go if you have some spare time left. It’s also free of charge.

Pretty educational and immersive museum on the everyday lives of Hong Kongers in the 50s and 60s. Free guided tours are offered in Cantonese, English and Mandarin. Make sure to check their website to see when the English version is available since it alternates between that and Mandarin weekly. The tour guide did a really great job of bringing the exhibitions to life, I highly recommend it.

free things to do in HK! Mei Ho House (美荷樓) is a rare historic landmark in Sham Shui Po that serves as the last surviving "Mark I" H-shaped resettlement block in Hong Kong. Originally built in 1954 to house victims of the 1953 Shek Kip Mei fire, it now functions as a unique combination of a heritage museum and a modern youth hostel. +1 The Heritage of Mei Ho House (Museum) This free-admission museum offers an immersive look into Hong Kong's public housing history from the 1950s to the 1970s. Themed Exhibitions: The museum features reconstructed units that realistically show the cramped and basic living conditions of early residents, where a 120-square-foot room might house five or more people.

A truly memorable visit to the Heritage Mei Ho House in Hong Kong. I really enjoyed the guided tour—both engaging and insightful. The guide has an excellent knowledge of the history of public housing in Hong Kong and brings it to life in a very accessible way. It’s not just about public housing history; you actually step back into an entire era, and at times it’s quite emotional. I highly recommend this visit, especially since it’s free. It’s a great reminder that price does not define quality. I’ll definitely come back with my family so they can discover the Hong Kong of my childhood.

HK history. Free entry. One of the first public housing blocks in HK working class area. Now this 1 block has been converted into museum on part of the ground floor and 1st floor and youth hostel. Can see how people use to live in the first public housing in HK. Well presented. Not very popular, so you can have a leisurely visit with minimal noise
