Shek Kip Mei is part of the Sham Shui Po District in Kowloon. Around Kwun Tong and Kowloon Bay many industrial buildings now house offices, restaurants, gyms and studios, while Kai Tak is a newer district. Kowloon's streets are busiest in the evening and at weekends, shops keep long hours with many open until about 22:00, and the Kwun Tong, Tsuen Wan and Tuen Ma lines plus buses and minibuses reach almost everywhere. Hong Kong summers are hot and humid, and typhoons and rainstorms come mostly in summer and autumn; when the Observatory issues signal No. 8 or above or a black rainstorm warning, many businesses close until it is lifted.

Superb slice of HK reservoir history. It’s a bit of a hike up for some but it’s totally worth the effort. Quite a unique space to visit. Highly recommended!

Worth a trip but be prepared for the physically demanding hike up. Dress appropriately and have a huge bottle of water to keep cool. Was not crazy busy on weekdays and easier to get pictures with no crowds. Shaded rest area has fans and clean toilets. Trek back down lot easier. Nice thing is MTR or minibus stops nearby.

In the fast-changing world of Hong Kong, it is rare to come across a historic structure that the government decided to preserve (instead of demolish). The path leading up Mission Hill to the reservoir was quite interesting to say the least, with shrines and a crazy amount of outdoor ping pong tables put there by locals through guerilla development, turning the area into an open-air community centre. After working up a sweat tracking up 86 metres to the summit, we entered through the gates and reached a flat landing area. From there, we descended into the old reservoir which is kind of a museum with information on the history of water supply in Hong Kong. The Roman columns gave it that cathedral look under the eerie lighting. There was really not that much to do up here but to simply admire the architecture and enjoy that peacefulness rarely found in this busy city.

The Best Hidden Gem in Hong Kong. I still can’t get over the fact that this is in Kowloon and not an ancient site in Italy - a historic reservoir where the British builders back in 1904 used traditional Roman engineering methods to craft over a hundred breathtaking arches! Yes, it takes a steep, calf-burning trek up the hill to get here, but the contrast is wild. One minute you're in the bustling frantic streets of Sham Shui Po, and the next you're stepping back in time to the Roman Empire.

有特色,值得一去, 但花15分鐘便看完。 A fascinating piece of Hong Kong history! This former service reservoir, built in 1904, was nearly demolished in 2020 but thankfully saved and designated as a Grade I historic building. The architecture is incredible—it really does feel like stepping into an ancient Roman cistern with its granite columns and red brick vaults. A few tips for visitors: The walk: It’s about a 10-15 minute hike up from the MTR station with over 300 steps. Wear comfortable shoes and bring water . Booking: It's free to enter. While you can now do a walk-in (on a first-come, first-served basis), I'd still recommend booking a free guided tour online in advance to guarantee entry and get the full story . What to bring: It can be a bit cool and humid inside, so a light jacket is a good idea . Well worth the walk up!
