Wan Chai is part of the Wan Chai District on Hong Kong Island. The north shore of Hong Kong Island is one of the densest business areas in the city: the MTR Island Line runs from Kennedy Town to Chai Wan, the trams ("ding dings") between Kennedy Town and Shau Kei Wan, and many businesses trade from upper floors of office blocks and older tenement buildings. The south side is known for beaches, trails and fishing harbours such as Repulse Bay, Stanley and the Aberdeen typhoon shelter, which get busy at weekends and on public holidays. Wan Chai mixes the office towers around the Convention and Exhibition Centre with old markets and tenement buildings, and nearby restaurants get busy during big trade fairs.

I was therefore not a total beginner, which was naturally an advantage, particularly as regards the written language. That said, I very quickly got into new territory on the spoken language, so I would not wish to overestimate my head start; - my aim was to "relearn" what I knew already and to then move forward in terms of all the key skills - speaking, listening, reading and writing (including grammar); - I began my lessons with Rainbow last March - I took 5 lessons of 2 hours every week up until the beginning of this year, when we moved to 3 times a week (to give me more time to assimilate the work given the level I had reached). The classes were, and still are, on a one to one basis; - as of today, I have had 191 lessons, therefore just under 400 hours of teaching, plus of course the homework and home study, which is hard to calculate, but I guess amounts to at least 200 - 250 hours (in case you do a quick calculation, I was away from HK for 2 months in total over the year, hence the
