About 燒味本色
燒味本色 is a Cantonese and dim sum restaurant in Sham Shui Po, at 深水埗元州街21-23號恆威閣 RM 1-A-B, 1/F. Locals and visitors alike tend to check the same things before going, so this page brings together the practical details: where it is, how to get in touch, when it is open and how customers rate it. The address puts it on an upper floor of a building (an "upstairs shop", very common in Hong Kong), so note the floor and unit number; lifts can be slow at busy times, and some older buildings only have stairs.
When choosing a restaurant, check whether the menu shows prices and the service charge, whether you need to book, and whether there are vegetarian or children's options. Restaurants must hold a licence from the Food and Environmental Hygiene Department, usually displayed inside. Lunar New Year, Mother's Day, Christmas and New Year's Eve are peak booking times, and some restaurants offer set menus or add a surcharge on festive days, so ask ahead.
Google lists the opening hours as daily, 09:30–21:00. It opens every day of the week. Arrangements may differ on public holidays, over Lunar New Year and when a typhoon signal No. 8 or above or a black rainstorm warning is in force, so call before making a special trip. You can call 2117 3823; a phone call is the quickest way to ask about availability, prices or how to get there.
It has a Google rating of 3.6 out of 5 from 207 reviews. Opinions are mixed but broadly steady, and the latest reviews are the best guide to what to expect.
Sham Shui Po is part of the Sham Shui Po District in Kowloon. Around Kwun Tong and Kowloon Bay many industrial buildings now house offices, restaurants, gyms and studios, while Kai Tak is a newer district. Kowloon's streets are busiest in the evening and at weekends, shops keep long hours with many open until about 22:00, and the Kwun Tong, Tsuen Wan and Tuen Ma lines plus buses and minibuses reach almost everywhere. Sham Shui Po is known for the electronics and second-hand stalls of Apliu Street and the fabric and button shops around Ki Lung Street and Yu Chau Street, where many older shops still prefer cash.

Foods here are good. I like all of it.

If you’re living alone in Hong Kong, this cha chaan teng is the perfect place to solve your lunch or dinner problem. Forget the sugary drinks and heavily processed cha chaan teng classics. Unless you’re trying to develop health problems, the Hong Kong-style roast meats are the real reason to come here. Skip the instant noodles. Order the roast goose leg with lai fun or rice instead. It’ll keep you happy for the rest of the day. And don’t ignore the humble serving of choy sum on the side of the plate. It may look like an afterthought, but it quietly captures the essence of Hong Kong comfort food.

Dropped by A Better Tomorrow in Sham Shui Po for their roast meat rice and it turned out to be a very satisfying meal. The goose was decent and quite standard, but the standout was definitely the suckling pig. The skin was beautifully crisp with that addictive crackling texture, while the meat underneath stayed tender and flavorful. I added $10 to upsize the suckling pig portion and it was absolutely worth it—more crispy skin and juicy bites in every mouthful. The rice was warm and fragrant, and the simple sauces complemented the meats nicely. No-frills setting, but the quality of the roast meats speaks for itself. If you’re in the area, the suckling pig is a must-order.

Was on my way home and passed by A Better Tomorrow, a restaurant with freshly made siu mei hanging in their front windows with meat juice dripping. Exactly what I wanted after a long day! Soup of the day was a classic carrot pork bone soup. Roasted Suckling Pig had a layer of crackling skin, melting fat and succulent meat which tasted a bit gamey. Savory bones. Poached Chicken was cooked to the right point. The chicken thigh was slightly pinkish. Smooth and tender meat. Delicately marinated. Roasted Goose Leg, as the most coveted part of the goose, was covered in a beautiful glaze. The marinade wasn't too strong which didn't overwhelm the goose flavor. The rice had well absorbed the meat juice. Roasted Pork had a layer of crunchy skin with a balanced amount of meat and fat.

A small eatery serving up roasted meats. The meats were below average and the restaurant wasn't exactly the most hygienic. We only stopped here because we wanted something quick and easy. Prices are affordable, but I wouldn't come again.
