Causeway Bay is part of the Wan Chai District on Hong Kong Island. The island is steep, with many streets climbing the hillside; the Central–Mid-Levels escalator links Central with the Mid-Levels and the Peak Tram runs up to The Peak. Offices, malls and old neighbourhood shops sit side by side, restaurants are packed at the office lunch hour (roughly 13:00–14:00), and with parking scarce the MTR, tram or bus is usually easier than driving. Causeway Bay is packed with malls and department stores and is very crowded at weekends; nearby Victoria Park hosts the Lunar New Year fair.

a good shop if you want to try snake soup. i always get the combo which is snake soup with either sticky rice or chicken rice. they put a lot of ingredients into the snake soup and it is a huge bowl so just the soup itself is quite filling. i never get thirsty afterward so i don’t think put too much MSG in it. as with their rice bowl, i prefer the chicken over the BBQ pork, the BBQ pork is quite fatty. overall, it’s an excellent combo. the shop is not big and it is not a fancy shop, friendly staff, the owner is always around to supervise the operation. high cp ratio especially in causeway bay area. i highly recommend it.

Which other country can you try snake soup? Ok, maybe China but I think HK is definitely more famous for it. Went in with high expectations but came out disappointed. The soup was a huge bowl and it tasted very fruity (sweet) instead of savoury. It wasn’t as tasty like a sharksfin broth because of the fruity ingredients they added to counteract gaminess from the snake (taste like chicken strips). As for the sausages in the rice bowl, there were two types: the normal Chinese pork sausage and the duck liver sausage. I think their versions were truly not up to standard. The sausages were thin and I can barely taste any liver in that version. I would say the fillings were pretty bland. Don’t even talk about the seating. Tables were small and do expect sharing with strangers. (Common in HK and I’m not complaining). They do provide an innovative plastic “shield” to preserve privacy. You have to see it to believe it. The staff were not the most patient of service providers as they rushed me to make the order. In the end we couldn’t finish the soup.

My Oriental trip happened to coincide with the start of the fall - Snake and Air Dried Preserved meat season. As such, I managed to fulfill yet another of my long awaited cravings….a meal of snake soup, snake juice marinated duck liver preserved sausages and air dried preserved duck! The latter, extremely hard to find in Toronto nowadays ... .and super expensive, if one does! CA$24 for just two tiny drumsticks! My go-to place in Hong Kong for snake soup used to be She-Wong-Yee in Causeway Bay. Not only was their price reasonable, their flavorful product was top notch and generously packed with authentic, traditional ingredients of shredded snake and chicken meat, tangerine peels, wood fungus, shitake mushroom, fish maw, bamboo shoots ... .etc in a great tasting soup base. However, what was even more amazing and delectable was their air dried preserved Duck Liver sausages infused with snake juice! Sadly, the owner called it quits a few short years ago. Fortunately, the chef responsible for making the highly praised products decided to take his skill and knowledge and re-opened at a place just around the corner from the defunct location. Time for another trek across the harbour to sa

I come here whenever I’m back in HK. A favourite in the winter for us for the hearty soup they serve. They serve various soup apart from the signature soup. They also have roasts which you can mix and match. Sharing of table is sometimes necessary during peak hours. Quick turn over so never too long a wait. A reliable classic and I suppose there aren’t many eatery of this type in HK.
