Ap Lei Chau is part of the Southern District on Hong Kong Island. The north shore of Hong Kong Island is one of the densest business areas in the city: the MTR Island Line runs from Kennedy Town to Chai Wan, the trams ("ding dings") between Kennedy Town and Shau Kei Wan, and many businesses trade from upper floors of office blocks and older tenement buildings. The south side is known for beaches, trails and fishing harbours such as Repulse Bay, Stanley and the Aberdeen typhoon shelter, which get busy at weekends and on public holidays.

Going in person to the Hong Kong School of Motoring was the best decision I ever made. Jenn Leung explained absolutely every aspect of the licensing process in detail, in perfect English and now I am enrolled in the licensing course. I highly recommend HKSoM for their staff's excellent procedural knowledge.

Nope, I cannot recommend the Hong Kong School of Motoring in Ap Lei Chau enough! This is an outstanding institution that excels in professionalism, safety, and expertise. Yes, they are very "by the book," but honestly, that's a good thing—it’s all in your best interest. Their methodical approach ensures that you not only pass your test but also become a safe and responsible rider on the road. I’ve tried another school before, but the difference in safety standards and organization is like night and day. The Hong Kong School of Motoring is leagues ahead in every way. They are also flexible when you need them to be, which is a huge plus. If you’re serious about learning to ride a motorbike, passing your test, and becoming a confident and safe rider, this is without a doubt the best motorbike school in Hong Kong. Highly recommended!

Don't waste money on their courses if you aim to learn real practical driving skills. The luck of getting a good driving instructor is rather low. Your designated instructor will only happily start your first practice lessons 8 weeks prior your exam date to ensure you don't practice enough and fail, despite you are a 100% beginner. Probably the boss's fault, as they intake tooooooo many students. Frastrating from the poor instructions during practice lessons to administrative stuff. Sadly, you are on the lower hand, once you have paid them 19K+. Don't be sold on the claim that it is "the easiest driving test route". When the route is appearantly simple, any trivial mistakes you made become critical 😉. Think twice (actually as many times as you can ) before committing to their courses.

The place is a total rip off and the customer service super rude. Be prepared to wait months, and months to sit exams, and if you don’t pass the firs time they’ll charge you thousands of dollars to resit basic tests, they’ll do their best to sell you extra lessons even when you have additional free lessons and don’t need to pay for more. When you do try to remove the additional sessions suddenly all the other charges magically need to be increased just to ensure they get as much of your money as possible…. They charge over $500 to print a document. The level of communication and the quality of material is very poor. You won’t learn how to drive at this place, you’ll be taught “how to pass a test”. The place is a total scam, poorly run and they have a monopoly so you can’t do anything about it. Go private and avoid this place if you can.

The instructors are of poor quality, often sleepy due to having too many students, and only become alert the day before your testing date. If you fail any part of the driving test, they force you to take a repeat course for either HK$ 5,500, HK$ 6,500, or HK$ 7,610, depending on which part you failed. They aggressively push you to join the repeat course, saying that if you do not make an immediate decision right away or come back another day, you will wait one year and may need to re-test every part. Very aggressive and very tricky! From my observation, it would apear that they incentivize instructors to ensure you are not familiar with certain sections because they benefit greatly from the repeat course fee's, which is a huge asditional revenue stream for the School of Motoring. I would highly suggest an independent driving instructor to anyone considering joing these guys. These guys have a monopoly in the Ap Lei Chau area and dont really care about reputation.
