Hong Kong's supermarkets, convenience stores and wet markets each have their role: convenience stores are mostly open 24 hours, supermarkets usually from morning until about 22:00, and wet markets are busiest in the morning and early evening. Since the end of 2022 plastic shopping bags cost HK$1 each, so bring your own; Octopus and e-payments are common, but not every market stall accepts them. Market stalls are freshest in the morning and may cut prices before closing in the evening; bring a bag and small change.

Google lists the opening hours as daily, 06:00–20:00. It opens every day of the week. Arrangements may differ on public holidays, over Lunar New Year and when a typhoon signal No. 8 or above or a black rainstorm warning is in force, so call before making a special trip. Phone: 2384 8988. Hong Kong numbers have eight digits; from abroad, dial +852 first.

Yau Ma Tei is part of the Yau Tsim Mong District in Kowloon. Kowloon is densely packed: Nathan Road runs north from Tsim Sha Tsui towards Prince Edward, lined along with its side streets by shops, restaurants and upstairs businesses, and most places are a few minutes' walk from an MTR station. Mong Kok's street markets, Sham Shui Po's electronics and fabric streets and Kowloon City's Thai restaurants are familiar landmarks for shopping and eating. Yau Ma Tei's Temple Street night market comes alive after dark, while the nearby fruit market is busiest before dawn.

A truly enjoyable HK cultural experience where one can buy and try many fruits unavailable in the US mainland. Be adventurous and try different offerings. Best was the coconuts we had in Costa Rica (where the Costa Ricans call “pipa”) are sold here at a steep discount. But shop around because different stalls will sell at different prices. Other things to try: durian, mangosteen (when in season), mangoes, etc. Be adventurous and try different fruits.

I came across this fresh market around 8 AM while I was on my way to the Kwan Tai Temple. The market is located on Canton Road and is mostly frequented by locals. There are street stalls as well as permanent shops on both sides of the road. A wide variety of fruits, vegetables, and meats—both fresh and dried—are available here.

I have not been to the wet market for about 5 years. However it keeps showing up on Google maps that I was there last week. So today I made a purpose visit to the wet market. A Sunday is probably not the best day to go to the wet market. Because The people who work there like everyone else they like to have a day off as well. However all is not lost, they will always be some shops open and today there was I only visited the ground floor and it was seafood and there's a couple of shops at the entrances that have all manner of items you may buy but mostly dry goods fresh goods for seafoods meat beef also. Often it's a very good restaurant at the top of the wet markets. I will look into that another time. These buildings have an all-round purpose. These indoor markets sell all manner of items. Where there is a market indoor market I should say you would normally find the public service facilities are in the same building so there are toilets and showers available to the public. Note, these are not western style facilities although they may be a couple of sit down commodes for the toilets most are squats. Plus these buildings serve as a rubbish collection point as well. Yau Ma Tei Market is an old market near Mongkok, it was built in 1957. It is a 3-storey building. There are many stalls selling fishes, fresh vegetables, fruits, poultry and meat. It is an interesting place to visit and take photos in the morning. Do watch your steps as it is quite dim inside and the floor can be wet.

Typical HK style wet market. Local produce including vegetables and meat. Should see how fresh meat are sold from the stalls versus that in butcher shop overseas. Interesting for tourist to visit it. So different from the Western world.
