About 觀音堂

觀音堂 is listed under temples, churches & places of worship in The Peak, Central and Western. The address is 香港島太平山太平山街34號. Below you will find what people usually look up before a visit: the exact location, contact details, opening hours and the Google rating.

When visiting a temple, church or other place of worship, dress respectfully, keep your voice down and follow any rules on photography. Lunar New Year, major religious festivals and weekends draw the biggest crowds, and some places only open at set times; if you want to join a service or ceremony, check the timetable first. Some temples are especially crowded at Lunar New Year and on deity birthdays, so avoid peak times.

Google lists the opening hours as daily, 07:30–16:30. It opens every day of the week. Arrangements may differ on public holidays, over Lunar New Year and when a typhoon signal No. 8 or above or a black rainstorm warning is in force, so call before making a special trip. Phone: 2547 1164. Hong Kong numbers have eight digits; from abroad, dial +852 first.

At 3.9 out of 5 on Google (33 reviews), it sits mid-table; the written reviews say more about service, prices and waiting times than the number does.

The Peak is part of the Central and Western District on Hong Kong Island. The north shore of Hong Kong Island is one of the densest business areas in the city: the MTR Island Line runs from Kennedy Town to Chai Wan, the trams ("ding dings") between Kennedy Town and Shau Kei Wan, and many businesses trade from upper floors of office blocks and older tenement buildings. The south side is known for beaches, trails and fishing harbours such as Repulse Bay, Stanley and the Aberdeen typhoon shelter, which get busy at weekends and on public holidays. The Peak is reached by the Peak Tram or by bus; its lookouts draw big crowds on holidays.

Kwun Yum Tong Temple on Tai Ping Shan Street isn’t much of an attraction, but it happens to be the oldest temple in Central district. Dedicated to the Taoist Goddess of Mercy, Kwun Yum or Guan Yin (Goddess of Mercy), the temple was founded in 1840. The story goes that it was built to house a piece of driftwood washed ashore on Hong Kong Island that was deemed to be an incarnation of the Goddess and carved into her likeness by a master craftsman from Foshan.

There are several historic temples along Tai Ping Shan Street in Sheung Wan including the Kwun Yum Tong (or Kun Iam) Temple. This is one of a fair number of temples dedicated to the Goddess of Mercy around Hong Kong. It is situated just a few metres across the street from the smaller Shui Yuet Temple which is also dedicated to the goddess Kwun Yum. The temple is open from 7.30am to 5.30pm daily. It is a single hall with an red tiled exterior. Most interesting is the delicately carved choi mun hanging above the entrance. This is worth a couple minutes to enjoy. Within the temple you'll find expected shrines, deity figures, hanging incense coils, incense burners. The interior area is small but worth a few more minutes to view before moving on. If you enjoy seeing historic temples and ancestral halls, you can combine a visit to the Kwun Tong Temple along with the Shui Yuet Temple which is basically just across the street and the historic Pak Shing Temple around 50 metres west of here.
