Wan Chai is part of the Wan Chai District on Hong Kong Island. The north shore of Hong Kong Island is one of the densest business areas in the city: the MTR Island Line runs from Kennedy Town to Chai Wan, the trams ("ding dings") between Kennedy Town and Shau Kei Wan, and many businesses trade from upper floors of office blocks and older tenement buildings. The south side is known for beaches, trails and fishing harbours such as Repulse Bay, Stanley and the Aberdeen typhoon shelter, which get busy at weekends and on public holidays.

Booked their Tasting Menu to celebrate my birthday. The appetizers were seriously impressive — especially that lobster bisque, so clear yet super rich and flavourful, proper high quality stuff! But when it came to the main “Beef Trio”, it just fell flat… The first two pieces came out kinda cold and the crust was a bit dry and chewy. Only the third one finally hit the level I was expecting. This place has been on my bucket list for ages, so I was a bit disappointed overall. Hope they can be more consistent next time!

🥩 A Hidden Gem for Steak Lovers – Backstreet Steak House, Wan Chai Tucked away on Cross Lane in Wan Chai, Backstreet Steak House is one of those rare finds that you only hear about from someone in the know. I was lucky enough to be tipped off by a good friend, and I’m so glad I followed their recommendation. The chef’s tasting menu was a masterclass in beef artistry, starting with a lobster consommé that surprised me with its delicate balance—rich seafood depth lifted by a subtle, pleasant vegetable sweetness. It was the kind of broth that warms you from the inside out. Next came the beef carpaccio, elegantly wrapped around peppery rocket lettuce. Each bite was a harmony of texture and flavor—tender, fresh, and just the right touch of boldness. The beef Parma ham paired with burrata cheese and balsamic vinegar jelly was a standout. Creamy, salty, and tangy all at once, it felt like a decadent little symphony on the plate. Then came the showstopper: the steak trio. Each cut told its own story— • 🇦🇹 Austria Belon cuts: robust and earthy • 🇺🇾 Uruguay hanger steak: lean, bold, and full of character • 🇺🇸 US Wagyu: melt-in-your-mouth luxury To round it off, the beef paste—a humble

My fourth time here and I’m already thinking of when to return! Price is super fair and service was excellent! The staff always made sure to explain what ingredients each course used! Steak was delicious as always; mashed potato was super buttery and smooth it literally melt in my mouth; and spinach was cheesy! I find the tiramisu too sweet for myself but otherwise I loved everything, even the complimentary Spanish bread was of superb quality. I’d totally buy bread from the restaurant if it’s for sale!

Great quality of food! The steaks have amazing fat distribution and are cooked perfectly. I had the cheek steak. It was very soft and it melts in my mouth. The steak my partner had was surprising for meat lovers like us. It has 3 textures and flavors in one piece of steak. The waiter also introduced the dishes so he enjoyed the dish with great build-up from the medium fattiness to the fattest part of the steak. For the 9-course menu, a lot of effort has been put into the dishes, in particular the chicken soup, which they spent 3 days making it. The course was well constructed, having the build-up from a lighter taste (scallops) to a stronger taste (chicken soup, and beef), then came the main dish. We were completely blown away by the chocolate cake they had. The chocolate cream was so smooth and we can feel the chocolate flavours just exploded on our taste buds. The 9-course menu is definitely worth the price.

I rate this steak house in 5 stars, as their services and food are really excellent. I have reserved a table for two through google maps reservations service, it’s very useful convenient. When i am submitting my booking, I was remarked this is a birthday dinner. On that night, they recommended a steak to us, it’s absolutely perfect for us and really delicious, as we are telling them we would like to choose some “soft” steak, but rich flavor. Anyways, the magical moment is dessert and the surprise gift. * the house wine is pretty good Thank you.
