Many Hong Kong restaurants add a 10% service charge to the bill, and tipping beyond that is optional. Popular places fill up at lunchtime and on weekend evenings, so book by phone, WhatsApp or a platform such as OpenRice; some set a time limit or a minimum spend. Most offer both dine-in and takeaway, and Octopus, credit cards, FPS and PayMe are widely accepted, though smaller places may take cash only. Dim sum restaurants usually charge a per-person tea fee, and dishes are priced by size; weekend mornings from about 10:00 to lunchtime are the busiest, and many places give out queue tickets. Book wedding and birthday banquets months ahead.

Opening hours: daily, 11:00–20:00. It opens every day of the week. Many small businesses close for a few days around Lunar New Year and may shut early or not open during typhoons and black rainstorms, so check the latest news before you set off. You can call 6103 6823; a phone call is the quickest way to ask about availability, prices or how to get there. It is a mobile number, and many local businesses also answer enquiries on WhatsApp. Its website is facebook.com, which may show prices, details of what it offers or online booking.

At 3.9 out of 5 on Google (419 reviews), it sits mid-table; the written reviews say more about service, prices and waiting times than the number does.

Sham Shui Po is part of the Sham Shui Po District in Kowloon. Around Kwun Tong and Kowloon Bay many industrial buildings now house offices, restaurants, gyms and studios, while Kai Tak is a newer district. Kowloon's streets are busiest in the evening and at weekends, shops keep long hours with many open until about 22:00, and the Kwun Tong, Tsuen Wan and Tuen Ma lines plus buses and minibuses reach almost everywhere. Sham Shui Po is known for the electronics and second-hand stalls of Apliu Street and the fabric and button shops around Ki Lung Street and Yu Chau Street, where many older shops still prefer cash.

Ming Fat on Ki Lung Street in Sham Shui Po is a long established local spot boasting over 30 years of history, renowned for its tofu pudding and street food staple, imitation shark fin soup. Notably, it operates as a designated Food Wise Eatery under the HKSAR Environmental Protection Department’s Food Wise Hong Kong Campaign, which launched in May 2013 to curb food waste at source. On this visit, I ordered a large bowl of their bestselling imitation shark fin soup ($25). As someone who avoids cash, I was glad they accept digital payments like Alipay, WeChat Pay, and PayMe, though Octopus isn't supported; after a minor glitch with PayMe, I settled the bill seamlessly via FPS transfer. However, with a portion barely the size of a palm, the price tag was hard to justify, especially compared to more generous, flavourful versions available elsewhere for less. I wouldn't make a special trip back, though I might pop in if I happen to be passing through with a quick craving to satisfy.

highly recommending the imitation shark fin soup with fish meat. the fish meat is bouncy and nicely flavoured, adds additional flavour to the imitation shark fin soup. shop also provides spicy pickled radish to add into the soup, its super spicy. chinese chives dumplings are packed full of juicy filings and skin is thin and crispy. another to eat is the handmade beancurd which is really smooth, comes with ginger syrup.

Leaving me hungry.... The faked shark fin with fish meat soup $29 which is the large size still very smallish. 4 pot stickers $28 and soy milk $12 were all very good but not filling. We are talking about a total of $69 I could have a nice fulfilling meal. The spicy radish on the table can really burn, so use it judicially.

Small restaurant but staffs were courteous. The signature dish lettuce and fish meat soup didn't disappoint. Imitation shark's fin soup and fried Chinese chive dumpling tasted great. Soya milk was homemade and not too sweet. Expect a queue at nearly all hours. Peak time queue will be long. Came at 11am when they opened. Will be back again.
