Wan Chai is part of the Wan Chai District on Hong Kong Island. The north shore of Hong Kong Island is one of the densest business areas in the city: the MTR Island Line runs from Kennedy Town to Chai Wan, the trams ("ding dings") between Kennedy Town and Shau Kei Wan, and many businesses trade from upper floors of office blocks and older tenement buildings. The south side is known for beaches, trails and fishing harbours such as Repulse Bay, Stanley and the Aberdeen typhoon shelter, which get busy at weekends and on public holidays.

Always a reliable choice! Having been here multiple times with different friends, The Optimist never fails to impress. We dropped in for an impromptu lunch after waking up late, and even though it was buzzing with a line out the door, we were glad we had a reservation. Seated comfortably on the second floor, we started with the appetizer buffet—as always, every single ingredient tasted fresh and of exceptional quality. For mains, my friend ordered the roast chicken, which was wonderfully tender and juicy, alongside the grilled fish, which was moist, flaky, and packed with flavor. The hospitality truly elevated the meal. A huge shoutout to Laziel, who poured us some bubbly and delighted us to delicious cheesecake and crème brûlée to cap off the meal. Sandes was equally fantastic and friendly, even torching the crème brûlée tableside for that theatrical touch and ensuring a perfectly crunchy, caramelized sugar crust. We left the restaurant completely stuffed and just a bit tipsy in the best way possible. Thank you, Laziel and Sandes, for making an ordinary lunch feel so special. We will definitely be back again soon!

Visited The Optimist on a Monday evening for dinner. We went for their set dinner for 2 and it was awesome. The restaurant is clean and it’s pretty packed for a Monday evening. Service is attentive and we were very well taken care of :) We had a great start to the meal with their squid and tuna tartare. The squid is exceptionally tasty and it’s strongly recommended. We had pork and oxtail for the mains and we love both dishes. Both the pork and oxtail are very tender and delicious. Highly recommend if you want great service and awesome Spanish food :)

Came to The Optimist for dinner during DiningCity Restaurant Week. The sleek green interior is probably one of the highlights- stylish, modern and a nice setting for dinner in Wan Chai. We started with the baby squid, which was tender with a nice char and a simple savoury flavour, while the Iberico ham croquetas were creamy and rich inside with a crisp coating; probably one of the more enjoyable dishes of the night. For mains, the barramundi a la plancha was nicely cooked and flaky, with the capers and peppers adding some acidity and saltiness, although overall the dish was fairly straightforward. The duck confit was tender and rich, paired nicely with the sweetness of the honey-roasted carrots and comforting roasted potatoes. For dessert, the crema catalana was smooth and creamy with the classic caramelised top, while the churro bites were warm and pleasant. Overall, everything was competently prepared and tasted good, but there wasn’t really a standout dish that I’d specifically come back for. Service was polite and efficient, but unfortunately the pacing made the meal feel quite rushed. Staff hovered and checked on us frequently, plates were cleared almost immediately (someti

The weekend semi-buffet and free flow package offer great value of money, and the service truly made our experience memorable. Our waitress, Kristine, provided absolutely exceptional service! She greeted us with a great smile and genuinely went the extra mile to ensure we were well taken care of throughout our meal. Her hospitality and warm energy completely made our day. If you visit, hope that you get Kristine as your server—she is an absolute gem!

I highly recommend The Optimist! The overall food quality was excellent and everything tasted wonderful. We were there to celebrate our anniversary, and the staff went above and beyond to make it special. A special shout-out to Sayna for being incredibly attentive and thoughtful throughout the evening! As a pregnant customer, I felt extremely well taken care of. Knowing that taking the stairs might be difficult for me, they kindly guided me to the lift. Furthermore, they proactively pointed out which dishes contained alcohol and were unsuitable for pregnant women, which gave me immense peace of mind. Their exceptional service and care made our celebration truly memorable. We will definitely be back!
