Mong Kok is part of the Yau Tsim Mong District in Kowloon. Around Kwun Tong and Kowloon Bay many industrial buildings now house offices, restaurants, gyms and studios, while Kai Tak is a newer district. Kowloon's streets are busiest in the evening and at weekends, shops keep long hours with many open until about 22:00, and the Kwun Tong, Tsuen Wan and Tuen Ma lines plus buses and minibuses reach almost everywhere.

One of my favorite breakfast spots while in Hong Kong was Mui Kee Congee. The congee was incredibly comforting and flavorful, and the beef egg roll was so delicious. It was easily one of the best breakfast combos I had on the trip. Service was quick, the prices were very reasonable, and getting there within the first hour after opening was definitely the move since it was still nice and quiet before the crowds started rolling in. Such a simple but satisfying meal, and definitely a place I’d come back to anytime I’m in HK.

So coming from Singapore, the expectation for Mui Kee is really different in terms of the location and the restaurant. This Mui Kee is located within a wet market, a typical hawker stall, very authentic and traditional. There were many tables available when I was there, so literally no queue and service was quite fast. There are plenty of fans to cool the patrons, even though it felt a bit hot and humid. And eating a hot porridge makes it worse actually. The porridge is very light and watery. Although it is light, it is flavourful and I chose the one with the pork liver. Somehow, the liver was cooked to the perfect doneness, I don't feel it is raw, but it is also too soft to be truth. The portion is also generous, where you will take a few bite before finishing 1 piece. We paired the porridge with the staple rice dough stick. Slightly oily, but very crispy, works very well with the porridge.

It’s the best freshly cooked congee I’ve ever had. The base is wonderfully smooth with a slight natural sweetness, and it stays thick all the way to the bottom without turning watery. I also had fish skin (爽魚皮)with a nice firm, springy (slightly chewy) texture, which I haven’t seen in ages. Since I was eating alone, I couldn’t order too much, otherwise I would’ve tried the rice noodle rolls as well. I’ll come back next time.

⭐⭐⭐⭐☆ 4.4 / 5 This is a real Hong Kong congee spot — no decoration, no marketing, just execution. Came during peak hours and the place had that classic local energy, but still runs efficiently. What stands out immediately is that the congee is made fresh (生滾) — you can taste it. Not pre-made, not sitting around. The 皮蛋瘦肉粥 (century egg & pork congee) was excellent: Texture is smooth but still has body Pork is fresh, not that frozen, mushy stuff Century egg flavor is clean, not overly sharp Temperature is right — hot but not rushed The 油條 (fried dough) was crispy outside, soft inside — perfect for dipping. What I liked most is the balance — not overly salty, not heavy, just clean and comforting. This is proper Cantonese congee, not shortcut cooking. Environment & Setup Very traditional setup: Shared tables Simple seating Functional, not designed Cleanliness is acceptable but not polished. You can tell it’s maintained, but not to a high standard. Still, nothing felt dirty — just very “local.” It’s also inside a wet market / old building environment, which adds to the authenticity but might not be for everyone. Experience Fast turnover, but not rushing you out Cash-style efficiency Fee

If you want to experience a classic Hong Kong comfort breakfast, Mui Kee Congee (妹記生滾粥品) is a fantastic place to visit. The congee here is exceptionally smooth and silky, clearly cooked with patience using the traditional “sang gwun” method where the porridge is simmered fresh to order. The pork ball congee was excellent. The rice porridge had a creamy texture and deep flavor, while the pork balls were tender and well-seasoned. Adding shredded ginger and scallions gave the bowl a nice aromatic lift. A must-order side is the youtiao (Chinese fried dough). It was crispy on the outside, airy inside, and perfect for dipping into the hot congee. Another highlight was the steamed rice noodle roll with minced pork. The rice rolls were silky and soft, and the savory soy-based sauce balanced nicely with the rich minced pork topping. To finish, the Hong Kong-style lemon tea was refreshing and helped cut through the richness of the meal. The restaurant itself has the classic local cha chaan teng feel—simple, lively, and authentic. Service was quick and efficient, and the atmosphere felt very local. If you enjoy traditional Cantonese comfort food, Mui Kee Congee is definitely worth a vis
