About Sumito

Sumito, a Japanese or Korean restaurant in Wan Chai, is at 香港島灣仔皇后大道東202號6樓. Before heading over it is worth checking the hours, phone number and Google rating below, so the trip is not wasted. The address puts it on an upper floor of a building (an "upstairs shop", very common in Hong Kong), so note the floor and unit number; lifts can be slow at busy times, and some older buildings only have stairs.

Many Hong Kong restaurants add a 10% service charge to the bill, and tipping beyond that is optional. Popular places fill up at lunchtime and on weekend evenings, so book by phone, WhatsApp or a platform such as OpenRice; some set a time limit or a minimum spend. Most offer both dine-in and takeaway, and Octopus, credit cards, FPS and PayMe are widely accepted, though smaller places may take cash only. Popular Japanese and Korean restaurants often take online bookings or queue tickets, and omakase counters usually ask for a deposit.

Google lists the opening hours as daily, 12:00–15:00 and 18:00–23:00. It opens every day of the week. Lunch and dinner are served in separate sessions with a break in between. Arrangements may differ on public holidays, over Lunar New Year and when a typhoon signal No. 8 or above or a black rainstorm warning is in force, so call before making a special trip. Phone: 6977 7721. Hong Kong numbers have eight digits; from abroad, dial +852 first. It is a mobile number, and many local businesses also answer enquiries on WhatsApp. More information is on its website, sumitohk.com.

Customers give it an average of 4.5 out of 5 on Google (226 reviews), a high score by any measure.

Wan Chai is part of the Wan Chai District on Hong Kong Island. The island is steep, with many streets climbing the hillside; the Central–Mid-Levels escalator links Central with the Mid-Levels and the Peak Tram runs up to The Peak. Offices, malls and old neighbourhood shops sit side by side, restaurants are packed at the office lunch hour (roughly 13:00–14:00), and with parking scarce the MTR, tram or bus is usually easier than driving.

🌟Jeff's Guide🌟 ✅ This is the best place to eat under the vibe of izakaya with loads of decorations which are very authentic 🇯🇵 From the video you will see the chef likes to heighten the atmosphere with drums when the sea fish kichiji is ready to serve and when some customers are celebrating their birthday 🎂 A small cup of sake is served on the house too🍶 ✅The food are in general good and worth the price ✅ A place where Japanese also dining here. Doesn't this mean something to you?😆 ↔️ A bit expensive to me personally but I will definitely come back again

If you're trying to hit up the absolute best izakaya vibe in Wan Chai, Sumito is a massive W. We sat right at the counter and watching the chefs do their thing over the actual binchotan charcoal grill was pure theatre. The smokiness they get on the robata skewers is elite—the chicken skin and wagyu were cooked to absolute perfection. Also, do not sleep on their aburi oshi sushi, the flame-seared flavor hits so different. The energy is super high, the staff is incredibly attentive, and the sake selection is deep. It’s easily the perfect spot to wind down, grab some incredible food, and vibe out with the crew. 🍢🔥

Overall a decent restaurant. Big fan of the boss (I assume), rly friendly guy. A great place for a birthday, they give you a birthday hat, free drink & sake for the table to cheers with the whole resto. My only issue: we ordered the chicken thigh skewers & it came out raw. Mistakes happen & that’s understandable, but how the waiters / waitresses dealt with it. No apology. No explanation. No acknowledgment. Wasn’t sure if it was because we were in a room but the service was rly lacking. Super thirsty & they only poured us one round of tea & we had to ask for that. It’s a shame because the food was quite nice & the vibes were good with games to play too!

Sumito, under the same group as Kaki Sakaba, is offering a couple of discounts like half price sake and steamed oysters. It's a typical local izakaya with staff chatting and drinking with guests the whole night. Honestly the grilled items were mostly overcooked. The chicken breast was tough and dry. Even the chicken liver which we requested rare was served fully cooked. Such a waste of the charcoal grill. It's a cool place if you wanna celebrate birthday with lots of people as they arrange specials for that. But if you're looking for some good quality food, you should consider another place.
