About Kinmokusei 金木犀

Kinmokusei 金木犀 is a Japanese or Korean restaurant in Central, Central and Western, at 17/F, The Loop33 Wellington St, Central, Hong Kong Island. Locals and visitors alike tend to check the same things before going, so this page brings together the practical details: where it is, how to get in touch, when it is open and how customers rate it. The address puts it on an upper floor of a building (an "upstairs shop", very common in Hong Kong), so note the floor and unit number; lifts can be slow at busy times, and some older buildings only have stairs.

Many Hong Kong restaurants add a 10% service charge to the bill, and tipping beyond that is optional. Popular places fill up at lunchtime and on weekend evenings, so book by phone, WhatsApp or a platform such as OpenRice; some set a time limit or a minimum spend. Most offer both dine-in and takeaway, and Octopus, credit cards, FPS and PayMe are widely accepted, though smaller places may take cash only.

Google lists the opening hours as Mon–Sat 12:00–15:00 and 18:30–22:30, Sun closed. It is open 6 days a week. Lunch and dinner are served in separate sessions with a break in between. Arrangements may differ on public holidays, over Lunar New Year and when a typhoon signal No. 8 or above or a black rainstorm warning is in force, so call before making a special trip. Phone: 9446 3030. Hong Kong numbers have eight digits; from abroad, dial +852 first. It is a mobile number, and many local businesses also answer enquiries on WhatsApp. More information is on its website, inline.app.

Customers give it an average of 4.7 out of 5 on Google (86 reviews), a high score by any measure.

Central is part of the Central and Western District on Hong Kong Island. The north shore of Hong Kong Island is one of the densest business areas in the city: the MTR Island Line runs from Kennedy Town to Chai Wan, the trams ("ding dings") between Kennedy Town and Shau Kei Wan, and many businesses trade from upper floors of office blocks and older tenement buildings. The south side is known for beaches, trails and fishing harbours such as Repulse Bay, Stanley and the Aberdeen typhoon shelter, which get busy at weekends and on public holidays.

Had a fantastic meal at Kinmokusei in Central. I went a la carte and ordered a bunch of their signatures: creamy mentaiko potato salad, beautifully smoked salmon and scallops with that lovely applewood aroma, plus fresh sushi like shirodai, aji, and their special kuruma ebi. The seafood bowl was the real highlight – loaded with premium seasonal fish over perfectly seasoned rice. Everything tasted super fresh and well-crafted. I really appreciate their in-house smoking technique – it adds a unique depth to the fish. The place has a cozy vibe and attentive service. A solid Japanese spot right in the heart of the city. Will definitely be back!

Kinmokusei redefines traditional dining with its innovative "Bespoke Omakase" and house-smoked, aged Edomae seafood. I tried their high-value lunch set in Central, which kicks off with a unique, refreshing sweet corn chawanmushi. The highlight was the outstanding Diced Seafood Donburi, featuring 15 types of premium seasonal sashimi over perfectly seasoned red vinegar rice (akashu). The meal concluded flawlessly with a crispy monaka ice cream sandwich packed with matcha, red bean, and chewy warabi mochi. It is an exceptional spot for business lunches, solo treats, or dates. Book well in advance, as it was completely full during my visit!

Kinmokusei, tucked away in a commercial building, provides a portal to a delightful experience of Japanese cuisine. The staff are attentive but not intrusive. You can choose to sit at the bar or table. The produce is fresh and Chef puts his personal touch on the menu. We came in for dinner but I’ve heard great things about their lunch sets as well. Can’t wait to come back!

🌸 Kinmokusei (金木犀) — your full Japanese comfort + freshness “taste journey” 🍣✨ Ready? Here’s the short step-by-step: 🍽️ Starter (先付) A small opening bite—clean, refined, and sets the mood. 🍮 Chawanmushi (冷製) Cold-style silky egg custard with sweet corn. Smooth, light, dangerously easy. 🥗 Appetizer (前菜) Crab + tofu + snow peas—comforting but still super fresh and restaurant-level. 🍣 Sashimi (刺身) Seasonal “four points” set—clean, delicate, ocean-fresh, melts in your mouth. 🍲 Simmered Dish (煮物) Braised abalone with liver sauce—rich, tender, deep umami. The mid-meal wow. 🔥 Grilled Dish (焼物) Saikyo-style black cod in miso—buttery-soft texture and incredible flavor. 🍣 Sushi (壽司) Chef’s selection (5 pieces)—perfect balance of rice sweetness + fresh fish bites. 🍚 Final Course (食事) — choose A Mini mixed sashimi bowl + hachō akamiso shrimp soup—warm, fresh, satisfying. 🍦 Dessert Red bean “most”-style ice cream—sweet, creamy, and perfectly crunchy/soft.
