Cafés, bakeries, dessert and drinks shops are often mainly takeaway with a few seats, and weekend afternoons are the busiest. Many accept Octopus, credit cards and e-wallets, and some run loyalty schemes or pre-orders; birthday cakes and festive boxes (mooncakes at Mid-Autumn, for example) usually need ordering in advance, a few days ahead on popular dates. Bakeries usually bake fresh in the morning and late afternoon, and popular items can sell out early.
Google lists the opening hours as daily, 09:30–19:30. It opens every day of the week. Arrangements may differ on public holidays, over Lunar New Year and when a typhoon signal No. 8 or above or a black rainstorm warning is in force, so call before making a special trip. Central is part of the Central and Western District on Hong Kong Island. The north shore of Hong Kong Island is one of the densest business areas in the city: the MTR Island Line runs from Kennedy Town to Chai Wan, the trams ("ding dings") between Kennedy Town and Shau Kei Wan, and many businesses trade from upper floors of office blocks and older tenement buildings. The south side is known for beaches, trails and fishing harbours such as Repulse Bay, Stanley and the Aberdeen typhoon shelter, which get busy at weekends and on public holidays. Central is Hong Kong's financial and business heart; the Central–Mid-Levels escalator links the streets up the hill, Lan Kwai Fong and SoHo come alive at night, and the Central piers serve the Outlying Islands.

We always find ourselves coming back to Tai Cheong Bakery for their OG cookie crust egg tarts. The crust is perfectly crunchy on the outside, with that slightly crumbly, buttery bite that makes it so addictive. The egg custard is silky and lightly sweet, and just melts in your mouth. Still one of our favourite egg tarts in Hong Kong and definitely worth coming back for!

Tai Cheong Bakery felt like one of those classic Hong Kong food stops where the reputation is built around doing one thing consistently well over decades. The shop itself is small, busy and very straightforward, with people constantly walking in just to grab a box of egg tarts and leave. There is not much ceremony to the experience, but that almost adds to the authenticity — it feels like a genuine local institution rather than a tourist-focused bakery. The egg tart itself was very good. The custard was smooth, silky and rich without becoming overly sweet, while the crust had that light, crumbly texture that made each bite satisfying. Fresh out of the oven, it had the kind of warmth and fragrance that immediately explains why Hong Kong egg tarts became so iconic in the first place. Simple food done properly, but sometimes that is all you really need.

In A Nutshell: -A small place to grab a hot & dripping moist egg tart. -The service is just okay, but the food was terrific. Overall, bring your own napkins bc they don't have them.

"I always thought of myself as James Bond." - Michelle Yeoh You must think I'm a freak for giving all the egg tart bakeries on Hong Kong Island perfect scores. Well yea, I can be a freak lol, but in this case it's all the bakeries "so far", not all were exceptional, but damn most are! Tai Cheong Bakery is the OG of bakeries on my list. Established in 1954 here on Lyndhurst Terrace, Tai Cheong Bakery is a legendary Hong Kong bakery famed for pioneering cookie-crust egg tarts. Known as a favorite of the last British Governor, Chris Patten, it is considered a must-visit for warm, buttery egg tarts, along with their signature Sha Weng (Chinese donuts). Bakehouse and Hashtag B Bakeries are the innovative ones that turned the "egg tart wars" upside down with modern recipes and Michelin baby followers lol. On the other side you have Tai Cheong Bakery that has been using the same recipe for 72 years. All amazing bakeries yet something in my heart will always favor the originals. On my visit I arrived about 10 minutes before opening and was second in line. For the 10 minutes I chatted with the sweet Korean lady who was there for the same reason as me... original egg tarts! Went and bought the traditional Hong Kong egg tarts to try. So I bought the 2 different versions available - the biscuit crust and the crispy layered crust. We prefer the crispy layered crust more. The egg portion is nice and moderately sweet. I did buy the century egg pastry to try too. I think it's ok. Try it if you like the acquired taste of a century egg.
